Meet Marianne Rice, an Artist featured in VIVA’s May Show, “This Place, These Faces”

Marianne Rice (b. 1979) is a representational artist born and raised in Sparta WI, where she resides today with her husband and four sons. Marianne has been working in oils since 2019, painting in both indirect and alla prima approaches, with a primary focus on the portrait and human figure. A member of the Oil Painters of America and the Portrait Society of America, and chair of the Portrait Society’s Literature Committee, Marianne has studied under artists Kathie Wheeler, Anna Rose Bain and Margaret Carter Baumgaertner. Having discovered her love for painting at the age of 40, she feels fortunate to have the opportunity to pursue a life in art.  It is one of the few innate human impulses that connects us to the past, reaches into the future and holds such power, that even amidst the trappings of modern age, still stirs the human heart to longing, nostalgia, familiarity, sadness and joy.  What a gift.
