| Raku is a special glaze and firing process. Glowing red pottery is removed from the kiln with tongs when the kiln temperatures reach about 1800 degrees Fahrenheit. The pots are then put into a can filled with paper or straw which lights it on fire. The process is finished with a lid that covers and smokes the pottery. This reduction gives each piece its unique look.
Most of the box forms are raku fired. Stella also works on the pottery wheel to make one of a kind high fired stoneware that is food safe. The colors and textures are inspired by the surrounding nature of the driftless region. Leaves, stones, tree bark and water are the inspirations reflected in her wares.
